Arts, music and boating are key ingredients in the recipe that makes Anacortes, Washington a delicious Northwest destination any time of the year.
Now add the welcome warmth of August sunshine and sprinkle liberally with peak summer events. Looks like you’ve got an R&R recipe guaranteed to delight all tastes.
Leading off an exciting schedule of free weekend events is the renowned three-day Anacortes Art Festival, which happens during the first full weekend in August (5-6-7 for 2016).
Pass beneath the Commercial Avenue arch at 11th Street and into a downtown neighborhood transformed into a vibrant showplace for artists and musicians. Stroll down the street on a sensory adventure that includes art of all kinds. Pause at the Port of Anacortes Event Center which houses an impressive collection of juried art.
Entertainment options are too many to mention! One of the highlights of the weekend schedule is a wide range of live music. There’s the ever-popular band of Peruvians to rock bands and blues singers on the festival Main Stage.
This is truly a festival for all ages, with features such as a free children’s activities area teeming with choices. There’s also a special street section populated by working artists eager to demonstrate their talents. Ask them about the possibility of a hands-on experience! Wafting through the air up and down the avenue are the tantalizing aromas of food dishes and desserts. Scattered up and down the avenue you will find food vendors and merchants galore. Stop off at the food booths and a beer garden, at the north end of the street.
Set aside your favorite shorts and tropical shirts. Don your sunglasses, slip on your sandals and plan to spend at least two days at this festival. Sample a variety of foods, and chip away at your to-do list for birthdays, weddings and Christmas. Hey, you might even collect a few treasures just for yourself!
