Business Spotlight: Frida’s Gourmet Mexican Cuisine

Chef Antonio and his sister, Rocio, were born in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico. Their parents came to America on temporary work permits and their mom wanted to have kids. They tried for eight years but had no luck. Her doctor recommended the couple move back to Mexico where it was warmer, and she immediately got pregnant with Antonio!

He said that when he and his sister were older, their parents moved to San Diego on another temporary permit and were hoping it would help their children learn the English language. When it was time to move back, the children decided to stay in America and move to Washington.

Frida’s Gourmet Mexican Cuisine opened in Seattle 25 years ago. They wanted guests to experience the real flavor of Mexico. To protect authenticity, Chef Antonio himself prepares all sauces fresh daily. The names of their dishes and their restaurant’s decor are inspired by Frida and her early 20th century contemporaries from the Mexican school of painting.

The restaurant has been named after the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. She was the wife of another famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. This marriage was an amalgamation of two artistic styles, the classical muralist Diego and the avant-garde Frida. This blend inspired them to produce a menu that offers both classical and gourmet Mexican dishes.

After having the restaurant in Seattle for five years, they then moved it to Millcreek, WA. They were here for twenty years before they came to Anacortes. They came here because the owner of the previous restaurant in their space nine years ago (Star Bar) was selling and he loved Frida’s food. He called them and asked if they would like to move up here and they accepted.

Chef Antonio’s favorite dish is the Chiles Mathias Goeritz and his favorite drink is the Paloma. Their most popular sauce is his homemade mole sauce.
